A distinction is made between simple fissure sealing and extended fissure sealing. In simple fissure sealing, the fissures and pits that appear caries-free are covered with composite after tooth cleaning and enamel conditioning. This is referred to as a primary preventive measure. Extended fissure sealing involves the treatment of an already existing small carious defect and is defined as a secondary preventive measure.
